East Meets West 88

Roger and Tom talk movies, Quentin Tarantino, Flash Gordon, Battlestar Galactica Razer, and more. Roger explains the movies he’s dreamed and how he doesn’t use frequent flyer miles.

  • Yeah and volk means more than people, it is more like umm, people bound to the land sort of thing, almost mystical. That is clearly the way the Nazis used it.

Roger, your dream was fun. Dreams seem to have a narrative because our brain basically makes sense of random stimulation. That said, it does not usually make that much sense...

RE: my previous comment - I mean "Folk" in English if you actually pronounce it phonetically, with the "L" sound ("fohlk") - not "foke" which is how we say it in English. ;oP
  • Sylvia
FYI - the German word "Volk" is pronounced like the English word "Folk" - the German "v" makes an English "f" sound, whereas the German "w" makes the English "v" sound.

    :o)
  • Inspired by all the Oktoberfests around I present you Artwork for ep 89, if Tom don't forget to use it :P

  • I'm surprised you didn't mention the significance of "88" in Chinese :)

Also, just wanted to let you know that East Meets West is in the Dialed In "podroll," but Tom probably knows that already.

Hi guys! just back from random treks all over the face of the earth, although, some how, being in an airconditioned room in july in brazil is less satisfying that being incredibly toasty warm in an antarctic base with a window looking out on an extremely cold, frostbite inducing, outside world. Anyway i just managed to listen to catch up on 3 weeks of bol, trust me, in brazil, connectivity in the form of wifi, is bad, or just really hard for a brit to find, i don't know which. in the process, i have declared the new BOL speed listenening record, 14 HOURS!!! Man, flights are crazy long. Also, don't listen to leo laportes gadget podcast (the daily giz wiz) while sleeping, i accidentally listened it while sleeping after a long halo 3 session and the next day, i bought a cannon 5d (i think the 5 stands for the 5000 dollar price tag), then went back to the daily giz wiz, found out that i coudnt remember listening to some of them, played them and discovered to my horror that leo laporte made me spend 5000 dollars by the power of subliminal messages. Oh, and has anyone contacted techpriest recently, he seems to have kinda dissappeared offline in the past couple of weeks, then again according to my deductions (think about it: teenage tech-savvy, uber-intelligent geek) there is only one answer: Halo 3. Also, more tom merrit on the buzz report, its really cool. But i need to ask, does eileen work at cnet? i think molly mentioned her on bol once saying she was "upstairs", so does eileen work at cnet or is eileen infact a cnet overlord. Oh and roger, since punterjoe and techpriest started this, i feel for the purposes of humour i must perpetuate this: i just started using it (emw) and cant stop using it.

The democratic theory of 'throw the bums out' only works if we (the people) actually are allowed to throw the bums out. After Florida (stop the recount!) 2000 and Ohio (Diebold: I guarantee a Bush reelection!) 2004, I think this theory has been proved wrong. If the GOP looses the White House as they already lost Congress, many current and former Bush Administration folk -will- be going to prison. Given that level of stakes, I fully expect a 'False Flag' incident very close to the next Presidential election. Remember the B-52 that recently 'accidentally' flew nuclear tipped missiles from the Dakotas to Florida? Remember some stories had the missile count as five? Other stories had the count as six.

Tom, you'll have a great time in Barcelona, it is a beautiful city. Don't forget to have some paella!

As for bad movies, my least favorite, alleged "good" movie, was The English Patient. I never understood how it could be nominated (and win!?!?) for best picture.

Agree with ~eriC that MST 3000 was alot of fun for watching bad movies. I remember when it was on Comedy Central and they used to have marathon shows over like Thanksgiving (Turkey flicks).

Luckily, there are MST 3000 dvds out - one of my faves in my library is Manos: Hands of Fate. I think I will watch that again this weekend.

BTW Roger is was nice meeting you at the Digital Life event.

    Hey Tom and Roger,

Long time listener first time comment.

    Love the show

    Especially the off topic rambles.

    GO(Enter favorite team here)!!!!!!
  • Speaking of bad movies, where you guys fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000? I still miss that show. Mike Nelson has kind of rekindled the idea with rifftrax.com. He and some others from the old show record a vocal track that you sync and play while watching a DVD. They get to tackle stuff that they could never get the rights to when they were on TV such as the Star Wars prequels. My Recommendation: The Riff Trax version of Patrick Swayze's magnum opus Road House.

There are two kinds of bad movies in my opinion. Ones that were done poorly just because it was throw away entertainment. The producers new it, the directer new it the actors new it. These can be entertaining but, you know, Meh. The sweetest form of bad movie is when those involved had their heart and soul invested and it still turned out horribly. You can see it anything Ed Wood did or my favorite Manos: The Hands of Fate. I movie thought up, funded, written and directed by a Texas fertilizer salesman named Harold P. Warren. Priceless

check out this link to a story about the history of Manos: http://tinyurl.com/2ugvdl

Not sure if you already caught it or not, but being a HUGE Tarantino fan (though I do agree with some comments Roger made), I couldn't let this slip by.

(3:14) Roger, you mentioned you didn't like Planet "horror" (Planet Terror) but liked the second feature in Grind House. Planet Terror was directed by Robert Rodriguez of El Mariachi/Spy Kids/From Dusk Till Dawn fame (which he also directed along with Tarantino... now THAT's a sweet horror flick.)

The second feature in Grind House was "Death Proof" directed by none other than Quentin Tarantino.

I dunno. Maybe that's what you meant, but thought I'd clarify.

As an aside, I rewatched the DVD release of Death Proof with extra scenes et all, and I must admit, as a stand alone movie, it succeeds even better (dare I say) than when it was attached to the entire Grind House presentation (though I loved watching them both side by side with the fake previews) It doesn't seem as slow when taken on it's own, and is SO worth a second viewing.

Keep up the great work guys! And if you keep using the CNET studios, I might have to charge you. (then get fired.)

  • CoolB's Crazy Comments
1: The Star Trek episode Roger was thinking of was The Changeling
2: Hmm.. Greyhound bus.. greyhound is a dog, Werewolves are also dog like.. Does Roger have a fear of dogs?
3: Regarding the money comment, in episode 87 Tom jokingly mentioned paying people to listen.
4: Have fun in Spain Tom. I'll actually be going there soon as well on a cruise.
5: Since Homeowner's Associations were mentioned, I thought some people might like this episode of the Griddlecakes Radio podcast. http://www.griddlecakes.com/index.php/griddlesode_21/
6: And since you were talking about animals voting.. be careful, it could lead to this... http://wackytimes.com/WackyTimesCarNames.html

The Jimmy Fallon IT sketch was "Nick Burns: Your Company's Computer Guy." MOVE! :-)

I like "The IT Crowd" as well ... we'll have to see what happens to it after it's been American-ized. it worked for "The Office" but not for "Coupling."

    Go Indians!!
  • Kelly
Have you watched that new show called The Big Bang Theory yet? It has geeks in it. I'm curious to know what Tom and Roger think of the characters in it. I think they have the lingo and jokes down pretty good.
  • SoCal Jess
Have either of you two seen Guy Ritchie’s “Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels” or “Snatch”? He’s been compared alot with Quentin Tarantino in movie direction and storylines. I enjoy Ritchie more since his filmmaking has more visual style and wit. Seems like Quentin T. is the ultimate film fanboy.

Roger’s Greyhound movie dream is reminiscent of “American Werewolf in London”.

I think it was Jimmy Fallon who was SNL’s “IT” character.

Off-topic: Have you two visited the de Young museum’s observation tower? WOWZERS!

Also, be sure to catch Filipino artist Michael Arcega’s Homing Pidgin exhibition at the de Young – You have to see the Oceania map made of SPAM meats.
  • SO in agreement with Roger regarding Q's mash-up unsuccess. I found the same problem in the new "Across the Universe" movie with all the Beatles music.

I think the difference between a good mash up and a bad mash up (at least with regards to movies) is what is driving the movie-the story, or the source material. I thnk Kill Bill (and Across the Universe to a MUCH worse extent) is driven by the source material. Q wants to show off (or at least it seems this way) just how many old movies he's watched. Similarly ATU is written to squeeze in as many Beatles songs as they can. It comes off cheesy.

Compare that with (and I get a lot of flack for this) Moulin Rouge which (I think) has a tremendous story behind it, and uses popular culture to enhance that story. I think Baz Luhrman is MUCH better at making that happen then Q has ever been.

    IMHO.

    Great podcast as always.

Couldn't be happier for the Yankees.

I was debating on whether to watch Chuck or not but I'm glad I decided to give it a chance. I really like it.

Tom, are you accepting "friend requests" on Netflix? If so, where should I send it?
  • Quick Comments:

    1. Yankees are out, they just lost to Cleveland.
    2. About Grammar Girl and the "She looks like an English teacher". My English teacher on 8th grade was pretty good looking. Is grammar girl also pretty good looking? :P
    3. Tom when you go to Barcelona see if you can get tickets to watch a Barcelona soccer game, they have a very nice team this year. Maybe the best club in the world right now.
    4. I'm really enjoying Chuck, funny show, but I agree with the Believe in Yourself kinda thing... BTW anyone here also a fan of The IT Crowd?
    5. Roger, in Canada Subway has a deal called Sub of the day, only $3,29 for a sub. Tomorrow they have meat ball sub on that deal. Should I eat there more often?

    Artwork coming soon.
