About Levi Strauss theories you can also add that there is a middle of sorts. It's the classic thesis, antithesis, synthesis. For example the book "Raw and the Cooked" you touched on the third element would then be rotten. Take meat - When in natural form you have it raw, when culture takes it over it becomes cooked. But if you do nothing with it the third option comes into play and it becomes rotten. These thesis, antithesis, synthesis ideas do not belong to Levi Strauss but fit into his ideas quite well..

I agree with Roger about Will Smith. It's not just how often he makes movies. It's how often he's in -or the lead in- sci-fi movies. Independence Day, Men In Black 1, Men In Black 2, I, Robot, Wild, Wild, West, now I am Legend. It's part of a larger problem, though. How often do we get to see a blockbuster movie with a Black lead who isn't Will Smith or Denzel Washington? As a Black, female, sci-fi fan this often irritates me. Sorry for ranting....

    1: mmm.. pie...
2: Roger's still read more Harry Potter books than I have, I'm holding steady at zero.
3: I still need to see Idiocracy, feel bad I haven't yet since I know one of the people in it... hope he hasn't noticed yet.
4: Apple High? Mad Dog Steve Jobs started a school? Are the uniforms black turtlenecks?
5: East meets West is the Apple of my eye... pod ;)

    Holy cow Tom

I'm looking at Digg right now, after spening the day free of computer or television stimuli and i see the story "Lakota Indians Withdraw Treaties Signed With U.S. 150 Years Ago"

yikes, boiling point is indeed fantastic
  • On the writer's strike, even if they are well paid (and I know some folks that do that work, they are not super rich, believe me) they still deserve to get their share of interweb royalties.

I have been on strike three times, once as a prof, and twice as a TA. I can say that strikes are no fun. Feeding a family of 4 on 325 a week in strike pay is no fun. Though in the prof strike at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2000 we did play road hockey on the picket line (we are Canadian after all). Academic strikes are odd. We were so civilized, hell the administration guys would come out and bring us doughnuts. I can say though that I swore off doughnuts for like 4 years after those 13 days...

Wow, I am amazed you guys didn't like Idiocracy. I thought it was a very amusing film (not the funniest thing ever or anything) and a novel premise.

Bummer, I was hoping Tom would go into the whole 'roids in Baseball thing....but I did like the debate over the writers. My thoughts: a bunch of professionals who get paid really well bitching about not getting paid even more fabulously better while screwing up their bosses schedules and costing a bunch of working folks their jobs. As for PED's, I'm so happy that Bond's isn't the only guy who gets talked about now!! Whoohoo!

almost forgot... there's a much bigger image of the Venetian Snares song @ http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/4f/Spectrogram_of_Look.jpg
  • JohninCT
    regarding hidden images in audio...

Venetian Snares hid an image of his cats in the song "Look" off the album "Songs About My Cats", and the guy from Aphex Twin put a picture of himself into one of his tracks.

you have to use a spectrogram to look at the audio..

    See the images here: http://www.bastwood.com/aphex.php

Also, you may have read that "Pete" Jackson is coming back to be the producer for the new Hobbit movies. (Yes, movies, they're turning the book into two films) No word on who's directing them yet.

Jayesh - It's too bad there's no tool to do for podcasts what Opera Mini does for webpages... digest it & turn it into something super-lean... maybe on-the-fly turning all video into 3gp or audio into some format like gsm or uLaw.. it would sound like a phone, but download FAST.
Tom & Roger, it was fun to hear you & V reminisce about your PCs 'back in the day'. I remember I had to wheedle & beg to get a hand-me-down IBM-XT @ work, which since it wouldn't run Windows, I threw Geoworks Ensemble on. This was in the heady days before IT managers trickled down to small businesses... I was also able to slip in a fax modem card... my company was unaware of fax @ the time & used to have people transcribe documents over the phone! I miss the days when companies permitted - if not actually encouraged - employees to think outside the box, if only because they were less concerned with process than results.
(sigh) good times.... still there was no intarweb, no podcasts, blogs, smartphones, or any other modern necessities. No nostalgia here :)
What do you think will be the next big thing that we won't be able to imagine life before? btw -It doesn't have to be tech - could be medical breakthrough, new energy source, earth-shaking philosophy (like proof that we are all just sims, or the antfarm of some advanced alien kid) , any category that will fundamentally change ...everything. Any ideas?
  • What sucks more then a 256kpbs internet connection?
