East Meets West – Podcast

East Meets West 100!!

Roger and Tom may have horrible sound on this episode (the mixer broke) but they’re certainly on in discussing podcasting, Lakota independence and Venezuela. EMW Landscape EMW 100a

  • Podcast Topic: What will be the first abandoned major American city? Let's just assume for a second that Detroit doesn't count and that New Orleans was a close call. What will be the first one to go to ruin?

Las Vegas's water issues could turn it back into the wide spot in the road that it was before the mob got there. What happens to Los Angeles if fuel costs make its car culture completely untenable? I know the fortunes of large cities ebb and flow with the decades, but i can imagine a complete collapse of city in the US in the next 50 to 100 years, maybe less. What do you guys think?

I also happen to think a good old fashioned existential crisis would probably do us all a lot of good.

Followup on the Lakota Sioux - they have not withdrawn from the US - see: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2007/12/23/133010/57/277/425848

    Grats on 100 Episodes!

Just a question, Tom/Roger, are you still watching Stargate Atlantis?

If so, what did you think of Fridays new episode?
  • SoCalJess
Tenacious Tom & Ranking Roger C - Congrats on the 100th podcast and best of luck on the next 100...

    Next podcast topics....

Bolivar Fuerte - si or no?

If Hilary Clinton were male instead of female, would you still vote for him?

Enjoyed podcast tips from comments - planning to do a podcast myself in the near future.
  • I wrote on the talk page but don't really know the format. I hope what I wrote will be useful. Would all the other listeners write in protest on the Wikipedia page?

  • I removed the deletion tag and added talk reasoning but if anyone can help improve it with sources, please do.
  • T/R, the EMW wikipedia page has been proposed for deletion

Personally I don't think it should be, as it is the product of you two notable personalities, but I'm not exactly sure how to qualify it appropriately.

It will be deleted on 2008-01-09 03:50. If someone wants to help it would be appreciated.
  • Hey Tom,

I run a podcast, too. I just started it about 2 months ago and I just bought a cheap little Alesis MultiMix8 USB and I just run that to my MacBook. I lucked out and found one for $78 on eBay. If you get bored, check us out at warpcast.net. (Yeah, cheap plug)

I'm also the guy that posted on the Buzz Out Loud forums a few months ago saying that I'm trying to create a degree in New Media. The University of Alabama (Roll Tide) has a program for creating a liberal arts degree. I just worry about how easy it would be to market myself in the economy that exists in the Southeast.

BTW, thanks for doing EMW and Buzz Out Loud. You and Leo are the two biggest influences on how I would want to run a podcast. Congrats on 100 episodes of EMW!

Finally got the audio. Tom & Roger sounded fine ...and Jango sounded like she was in the room with me! Content trumps sound quality anyway. Crap in hifi is still crap, but compelling content is worth getting through the grunge. It's like the bootleg/basement tapes version of EMW. That makes it all the more rare. ...and hard to download ;)

I beg you to use a host other than archive.org. Haven't seen sub 3-KB/sec download speeds since the early 90's with a 14.4 modem.

  • Tom, I found Iberian ham at my local supermarket, but it is sold in vacuum-packed packages and it is also quite expensive (the equivalent of 19 USD for just 3.5 oz). It seems to be original though.

Is this how you also buy it in your city? Or can you actually find the actual cured hams on display at the butcher house?

Here's my experience on why Lakota independence will fail. First, it doesn't seem as it is an existing tribal government initiating the move.

Also, look at how tribes treat revenue now. Gambling is bringing tons of cash to reservations, but are those reservations substantially better off? Some minor improvements have been made. I can't see how the influx of cash isn't just going to tribal leaders and their cronies.

Have an election and see if a tribe is willing to get rid of U.S. citizenship. There is probably very little support at the grass-roots level when the consequences of independence are told.

I think I'm too bleary-eyed from New Year's eve (no wild revelry, just a traditional 3-stooges marathon on local TV)... when I saw the title in iTunes, I thought for a moment it said "East meets W00t!" ... Alas, archive.org is balking, so I can't grab the audio. Will try later. I'm sure it's not as bad as you imply.
Have either of you guys - or anyone on the forum - had a chance to play with the Zoom-H2? It's a flash-based audio recorder that resembles an old, bulky, electric shaver. It has 4 built in mics & records 2 or 4 tracks directly to WAV or MP3 with lots of adjustable parameters. It can do really high quality 24-bit 192Khz WAV down to insane amounts of low bitrate MP3 audio onto SD cards up to 8GB. I only mention this because it's insanely cheap for what it does (
  • Did you know that for the price of a cup of coffee you can help these podcasters produce this show?

i pledge 2 dollars, that's right two American dollars to the get Roger and Tom a decent set of headset mikes and a mixer. Won't you help me? Think of the podcasters, won't you?

The Sound wasn't that bad, i've certainly done worse, if not for Adobe Audition, my podcasts would be a DISASTER. I'll pump this show through adobe audition and send an mp3 to you if you want. Podcasting is not dead, the NAME is dead. The term podcast has become almost be-littling, "oh, you run a little podcast", the Pixelcorps has done a great job with using podcasting as a PLATFORM, and referring to their podcasts as "shows", i mean, thats what they are! Podcast's arent really big money makers, but they can be, not at like network levels, but they can still make money.
  • Congratulations on the 100!

I've been listening to both of you guys independently for a few years now, but only just started listening to East Meets West a few episodes back. I like it because you guys are obviously two intellectuals who get along who talk about interesting things. For me, a weird high school student, that's appealing.

I've got a few words about podcasting. I listen to 21 podcasts right now. Yeah, it's a lot, but I actually feel like they supplement my (sometimes crappy, public) education. I listen to a slew of technology shows, which are usually for my entertainment, but I *do* get something out of them. Different than the TWiTs and Diggnations, there are educational shows like Security Now! and MacBreak Tech, which teach me things that no person in my small town could.

Besides the techie aspect, I receive a lot from the podcasts I listen to. I listen to the Financial Aid Podcast, which gives me information about saving money, economic news, and finding scholarships for when I get into a college next year. I listen to Grammar Girl's podcast, something that I'm convinced helped my writing SAT score, and other shows about GTD (Getting Things Done) and other useful life practices. I also listen to shows about marketing, even though I hate advertising (I'm Ricky the ad-hater on BOL, by the way). I just think the information is very important.

The shows are entertaining. Take, let's say, This American Life, for instance. It's a repurposed radio show from Chicago Public Radio, for those who don't know, and it's one of the most thought provoking pieces of audio I've ever heard. Quickly, it's become my favorite things to listen to.

Sure, this has deteriorated into me plugging shows I like, but I think my point is still valid. The independent media in podcasting is, in my experience, widely entertaining, educational, and inspiring. And yes, the corporate shows are sometimes great too - Buzz Out Loud is an example of this. For me, a student trying to get ahead, it's a great alternative to television. So, to spite any advertising troubles, I hope the medium keeps flourishing.

    Keep up the good work.
  • 100, awesome!
