Getting ready to ride out the hurricane (well, probably a tropical storm by the time it gets to me, I’m nearly 200 miles from the coast.) Locally, we have a lot of traffic and the shelters and hotels are full, but so far its been very calm and orderly without the logistical nightmare that was Katrina. Hopefully Gustav will be gentle and everyone can return home in good order.

Just in case, I’m anticipating a few days without electricity, so I’m charging all of the iphones, ipods and laptops and syncing up with lots of podcasts. I was going to save East Meets West for the coming week, but couldn’t resist the urge to go ahead and listen while my iPhone takes its typical annoyingly long time to sync. Ah well, I still have an a few gigs of Strong Bad video and other podcasts.

I hope all those affected by Gustav are safe and sound.

To all those people who think that EMW has bad sound quality, go visit episode 1: then rethink your statement.

What mics do you use to record EMW?

Are you wikipedia “inclusionists” or “exclusionists”?

I saw Superman Returns the day it came out and man was I disappointed! It only had one good action scene (the airplane rescue). Bosworth was plain awful as Lois Lane, undoing all the hard work Margot Kidder put into that character. I just didn’t care for the character at all. Lois Lane is supposed to be a Pulitzer prize winner and Bosworth’s Lois didn’t look a winner to me.

If there was something I liked about the movie, it was when Frank Langella’s Perry White said “Winning a Pulitzer is like winning an Oscar: no one remembers what made you win it, they just remember you won one.”

    On swearing:

IMO, swearing is almost like violence. You need to do it sometimes even if you don’t want to.

I remember this bully during my junior year, he made a habit of writing profanity on the back of my white uniform almost since the start of the school year. I was a transfer so I did not know anyone, maybe he thought that was my weakness, plus the fact that he’s a huge 5-11 guy and I’m only a reed thin 5-9 dude. The big guy just won’t listen to reason or pleading.

At the end of the first week, we did not have any teachers around. I sat down on my chair and crashed on the floor because he moved my chair as I sat down. The howls and laughter of my classmates buzzed in my ears. I saw red flashes and before I can stop myself, the bully’s face caught my right fist at full strength.

“Do that $h17 again and I’ll f*ck your face beyond recognition.” I said in my native tongue.

The laughter stopped, the blood flowed, but I never needed to be violent again up until I graduated high school.

Now, I don’t advocate swearing or violence to solve any problem but sometimes it’s just necessary.

The last 2 or 3 episodes do not download correctly for me using Zencast Organizer. I shows up at 3.99G “downloads” instantly, and is unplayable. Is it just me, or did something change.

As someone who doesn’t swear, and due to upbringing, finds swearing nearly abhorrent, i A: thank tom for respecting those of us who have that opnion, and B: agree that just occasionally, very rarely, it might be necessary to swear. Swearing, if used sparingly, is not the sign of poor education or intelligence, however, if used in copious amounts, i think that swearing is a sign of a lack of ability to express opinions in a reasnoble manner.

I swear all the time, I swear in class even. I have not ever say, hit my kids, and I have not been in a fight since I was 19, when two guys came at me. So I am hardly violent.

It may be a cultural thing though, as I am Canadian.

I wouldn’t want to have a prolific amount of swearing in the podcast. However, it’s just words. There are far worse things to get bent out of shape over.
