When you compared The Doctor to Merlin, I was reminded of the Seventh Doctor story “Battlefield”. In this story, it’s implied that he will become Merlin in a future regeneration.

I remember one scene when he translates something, and mentions it’s his handwriting.

    1) Just curious what you thought of the whole Amy/Rory dynamics. Personally, I loved the Amy Pond character but felt Rory ruined it. One thing I tend to notice is that the people who like Rory most seem to fit his body type (Tall, Lanky a bit wimpy) so I’m guessing that Tom might like him a lot more than Roger.

    2) There is a red shirt day. Its “Gay Days” at Disneyland and Disney World where thousands have their unofficial meetup and everyone wheres a red shirt. I have no problem with it, but I first learned about it when I was actually at Disneyland with my son 6 years ago and people kept high fiving me. The dates change every year so pretty much I just quit wearing Red when we go to Disneyland or if I have to shop at Target.

The doctor doesn’t get younger with each regeneration. Peter Davidson was the youngest until David Tennant meaning all the intervening ones were older than number 5.

One of the reasons Donna is my favorite companion is how tragic her story is. She starts out as somebody who defines herself by the expectations of other people (her mother, her friends, etc.) and eventually grows into somebody who is not only a completely independent person but the Doctor’s literal equal. When all that growth gets ripped away and she reverts to who she was before the Doctor came into her life it ripped my heart out. The only modern Doctor Who story that matches that level of tragedy is the moment her grandfather knocks on the glass booth in The End of Time.

Aren’t summer blockbusters usually defined as movies that fall between Memorial Day and Labor Day?

In your conversation on viral marketing the week before, I’ve definitely heard of plenty of pitches from companies that claim expertise on “viral marketing.” Even within marketing departments I often hear of clients’ desires of having a campaign “go viral.” It’s a natural byproduct of an industry that is all about “social” thanks to networks such as Facebook and Twitter. What does that all actually mean? Often times it refers to manipulation of social channels (Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, etc.) – or at least figuring out how to optimize on those platforms for maximum “organic” shares, likes, retweets, etc. Other times and other companies will enlist “bloggers” and “social leaders” to promote or “write about” the product (in an “authentic” tone, of course), which they claim in turn will “influence” their circles, thus creating “viral buzz.” While there’s definitely differences in what’s organically viral (e.g. internet memes, etc.), there is still some sort of validity in “paid” viral campaigns.

    Topic for a future show:

What are EMW’s thoughts about USA’s slow adoption of the metric system? Is it a states vs federal thing?
Article about Canada’s mixed adoption: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metrication_in_Canada

(Canada does list their speeds in KM and the weather is listed in Celsius — so part way there.)

I know I am a couple of months behind, but I just listened to this episode. I think that Red Shirt Memorial Day is a great idea along the lines of Towel Day (
http://towelday.org/). My immediate thought about when to have it was that it should be on the day that the first Red Shirt was sacrificed to a sci-fi plot, possibly the original air date of the first TOS episode where a Red Shirt died. I am sure that there are other more dedicated Star Trek TOS fans out there that either know that off the top of their head or can pull up the first season episodes pretty quickly.

I know it is a little weird to like a podcast that is just two guys talking about whatever, but you guys come up with some interesting topics. Keep up the good work.

By the way, Roger, I live near Modesto, and am trying to get my wife to go with me to The Fisherman’s Galley even though she doesn’t like seafood. Any recommendations if I actually get her to go?
